Wigan Gateways - Design, Implementation and Public Consultation

TEP was appointed by Wigan Council to carry out two gateway schemes to enhance the A49 approach into Wigan. The Marus Bridge Gateway was completed in 2004. Its concept is based on the four themes of sport, industry, the environment and the arts, identified and developed through a public consultation exercise involving local school children.

As part of the second phase of work, TEP organised an artist’s competition for a new sculpture to be located on Landgate Roundabout. ‘The Spirit of Wigan’, designed by local artist Clare Bigger, won the public’s vote. As well as securing planning permission, TEP also gained £60,000 of additional sponsorship. TEP designed a complementary setting for the sculpture and project managed its implementation and sculpture installation.
