Pontefract Park and Racecourse is the largest urban park in the Wakefield district. It is owned and managed by Wakefield Council and Pontefract Park Race Company.

As part of the renewal of the racecourse lease in 2011, the Council and Race Company agreed that a landscape management plan was essential for the future development of the Park and Racecourse.

Prior to producing the management plan, TEP carried out landscape, ecological and arboricultural surveys, and consulted with the people who look after and use the Park and Racecourse on a day to day basis. The consultation included questionnaires for all Pontefract residents via the Council’s and Racecourse Company’s websites. Two public exhibitions were held to enable residents and interest groups to contribute their ideas.

This information was used to put together a strategic framework to ensure the future plans met the requirements of the Council and the Race Company and, where appropriate, with the needs of Park users. Preferred solutions were identified in a park development masterplan. TEP also produced a 10-year costed action plan.
