Dewhirst Road Habitat Bank
We delivered a suite of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) services for land at Dewhirst Road, Rochdale, supporting both the site design and the requirements for establishing a Registered Offsite Biodiversity Gain Site (ROBGS), also known as a ‘habitat bank’.
TEP ecologists began with an ecological desk study and habitat assessment to determine the site’s baseline habitat value and to understand its wider ecological and legislative context.
Using these findings, we completed a BNG assessment with the Statutory BNG Metric Calculator to evaluate the potential uplift in biodiversity units (BUs). The proposed interventions were designed to maximise BU yield and enhance the site’s ecological value for a range of species. This assessment informed the client’s decision on whether to progress the site as a habitat bank.
Following the client’s decision to proceed, we finalised the BNG metric and produced detailed GIS plans illustrating both the baseline conditions and the proposed habitat creation and enhancement measures.
TEP’s landscape management team then prepared a Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP), outlining the long‑term management, monitoring, and maintenance commitments required to deliver the proposed habitats and meet the metric targets. These elements formed a core component of the ROBGS application.
The Dewhirst Road habitat bank has since supplied biodiversity units to a nearby housing development that was unable to achieve the mandatory 10% BNG requirement within its site boundary.
