Biodiversity Net Gain
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) ensures that development leaves habitats in a better state than before. In England, BNG is now mandatory under the Environment Act 2021, requiring a minimum 10% uplift in biodiversity value. Wales takes a qualitative approach, focusing on ecosystem resilience, while Scotland is moving towards a metric-based system as part of its national biodiversity strategy.

ButtonTEP has considerable experience delivering BNG across diverse projects. Our multi-disciplinary team of ecologists, landscape architects, arborists, geospatial analysts and planners, offers a fully integrated service. This includes baseline habitat assessments, statutory metric calculations, landscape design to meet BNG targets, and the preparation of Biodiversity Gain Plans and long-term Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans.
To inform BNG strategies we utilise bespoke software to identify early indications of net gain or deficit, helping assess site viability and likely habitat requirements. Where off-site solutions are required, we undertake feasibility studies to identify and optimise realistic biodiversity unit increases and support the development of habitat banks.
Support is also provided to landowners and local authorities to identify opportunities for biodiversity enhancement across large geographical areas. This enables clients to understand both the supply of biodiversity units and the likely demand generated by future development. Using practical surveys and our bespoke HabiTEP system, we map habitat baselines and explore achievable gains.
Our service is underpinned by cost modelling and closely aligned with our carbon and water services, providing a holistic approach to environmental net gain.
Biodiversity Net Gain SERVICES
BNG Viability and Estimating
We use bespoke geospatial tools to rapidly evaluate the likely Biodiversity Net Gain outcome of development proposals at early RIBA stages. This early clarity supports informed design choices, avoids unnecessary costs, and ensures BNG is considered proactively rather than reactively.
HabiTEP
Our bespoke HabiTEP system maps habitats, calculates potential biodiversity gains, and helps plan practical, achievable actions, supporting informed, integrated, and effective delivery of biodiversity net gain.
Baseline and Assessments
We carry out baseline habitat assessments to measure existing biodiversity, providing the foundation for metric calculations, development planning, and delivery of measurable biodiversity net gain outcomes.
Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans
We prepare Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMP) that provide structured guidance for maintaining, enhancing, and monitoring habitats, ensuring biodiversity gains are achieved and sustained over time.
