Timber Works

Timber Works is a sustainable neighbourhood in the centre of Cambridge that delivers 295 homes, including 118 council homes, a children’s nursery and a new public park. We were commissioned by Cambridge Investment Partnership to lead the landscape from early concept through pre-planning design, to securing outline and full planning approvals, and then into technical design and on-site delivery support.

Our first task was to unlock the potential of this brownfield site. Working closely with the project architect and local stakeholders, we shaped a layout that sensitively introduced new homes while creating generous green spaces for community use. We designed new pedestrian and cycle routes, engaged with CamCycle to prioritise active travel, and positioned buildings to respond to the adjacent main line railway while protecting amenity and outlook.

At the heart of the neighbourhood sits a central park, a multifunctional space where people and wildlife can thrive. The park incorporates sustainable drainage features such as swales, rain gardens and a floodable, playable landscape that manages surface water while providing opportunities for informal play and biodiversity enhancement.

The site’s history as a timber yard (dating to 1928) inspired the landscape design. Timber appears throughout, from natural log play features to crafted timber bridge crossings, celebrating local industrial heritage and creating a strong sense of place. Our technical work included planting plans, construction details and specification, phasing advice and on-site support to ensure the design was delivered to a high standard.

Throughout the project we focused on resilience: selecting robust plant palettes, integrating nature-based drainage and designing flexible spaces that will adapt as communities change. The result is a sustainable, well-connected neighbourhood that balances housing need with quality, verdant public realm.
