Beckton Gasworks, London
Our Historic Environment team carried out historic building recording of Gasholders 7 and 8 at Beckton Gasworks, the last surviving elements of one of Britain’s largest gasworks and a filming location for Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.
Constructed in 1870, the gasworks expanded in phases to include nine gasholders, each increasing storage capacity. Gasholders 7 and 8 were built in 1876, designed by engineer Vitruvius Wyatt, with Gasholder 7 rebuilt as a spirally-guided gasholder in the 1940s. The gasholders originally featured cast-iron standards with decorative finials and entablature boxes, which were carefully recorded.
Our team carried out a comprehensive photographic survey, took measurements, and produced sketches and measured drawings. During demolition works, we accessed the gasholders to record internal structures, and 3D photogrammetry models were created for key elements such as the decorative finials and entablature boxes. The recording provides a detailed archive of these historically significant industrial structures, supporting understanding, conservation, and research.
