Chiswick House and Gardens

We were appointed to support the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust in discharging its legal duty of care in respect of trees across one of London’s most significant historic landscapes. Chiswick House and Gardens is a high-profile public green space with exceptional heritage value, a mature treescape and high visitor numbers, requiring arboricultural advice that balanced safety, conservation and amenity.

We delivered an arboriculture-led approach with tree risk management as a ‘backbone’, enhanced by integrated input from heritage and ecology specialists. The initial commission reviewed existing surveys and datasets, combined with site engagement to understand character areas, patterns of use and management priorities. From this, a practical tree management framework was developed, dividing the site into character areas and key features, each supported by guiding principles to balance heritage significance, visitor experience, biodiversity and environmental benefits.

This spatial framework was embedded into a detailed inspection of all trees across the site, enabling risk-related works to be specified sensitively while proactively identifying positive management opportunities beyond risk abatement.

Surveys were undertaken using the Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) method and TEP’s Tree Plotter software, applying a transparent and repeatable risk assessment aligned to an agreed tolerable level of risk.

We have since provided ongoing, long-term support to the Trust, including a full inventory survey of over 1,800 trees and 17 groups (including veteran trees), annual tree risk inspections, woodland condition assessments and a Woodland Management Plan focused on climate resilience and habitat enhancement.

Additional commissions have included arboricultural impact and method statement advice to support new recreational infrastructure, boundary tree assessments to address neighbour concerns, advanced decay detection surveys for high-value heritage trees, and regular training and advisory support for staff, trustees and volunteers.
