Telford Landscape Studies
We worked with Telford & Wrekin Borough Council to complete a series of landscape studies supporting the Local Plan Review. The brief was to provide robust, borough-wide evidence on landscape character and value, to help guide land use planning and land management decisions across Telford & Wrekin.
The Landscape Character Assessment builds on the 2006 Shropshire Landscape Typology, providing a more in-depth understanding of the borough’s cultural, historic and perceptual qualities alongside its physical characteristics. We reviewed and, where necessary, refined the boundaries of each Landscape Character Type to reflect how the landscape has evolved over the past 15 years. The assessment describes all 14 Landscape Character Types in detail, identifies key sensitivities and values, and sets out practical landscape management recommendations and development guidelines to support decision making at both strategic and local levels.
Our Landscape Capacity Study adds another layer of insight, building on previous sensitivity assessments to evaluate where the landscape could accommodate strategic development over the plan period. This study provides officers with clear evidence of where landscape and visual impacts are likely to be greatest, and highlights areas that may have the capacity to absorb change with minimal effect on the character of the borough.
Finally, the Landscape Designations Review examined the quality and value of landscapes across Telford & Wrekin, identifying those worthy of additional protection and supporting the Strategic Landscape designation. We also advised on the use of alternative designations to safeguard areas that, while not of high landscape merit, would still benefit from protection.
Through these studies, we provided the council with a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of the borough’s landscapes, supporting well-informed planning decisions and helping to ensure that the character, beauty and ecological value of Telford & Wrekin’s landscapes are preserved and enhanced for the future.
