Langarth Garden Village

Langarth Garden Village sets out a clear vision for a new, well-connected garden community in Cornwall, structured around a resilient network of multifunctional green infrastructure.

Commissioned by Cornwall Council, the scheme provides for 3,500 new homes, employment opportunities and integrated public services, all guided by the Langarth design principles that prioritise community, place and nature.

We produced the landscape strategy for the site which establishes a multifunctional network of green and blue spaces that provide recreation, wildlife habitat, active travel routes and stormwater management. Working with AHR, we prepared a Green Infrastructure Parameters Plan that was approved at outline stage and now guides future detailed applications.

We also contributed to the Design Code and produced visualisations and detailed landscape plans for key spaces to support funding, delivery and community consultation. This includes the £47.5m Northern Access Road (NAR) which is under construction and forms the major 3.2km spine road through the garden village, maximising sustainable transport and providing access to the development plots. Our focus was to create a place that grows from its local character, meets long-term climate resilience goals and supports a mix of homes, jobs and community facilities.

We began with a thorough analysis of the site and its historic landscape: the locally steep slopes, Cornish hedgerows, historic routeways and the Scheduled Monument at Governs, and worked with ecologists and historic environment specialists to ensure those features were protected and celebrated. Our approach retained the setting and key views to the monument and wove hedgerows and routeways into the masterplan to strengthen local identity.
