Oxford Burial Meadow

Oxford Burial Meadow is a low-impact burial landscape designed to provide long-term burial capacity while enhancing the greenbelt edge and creating a restful, natural, accessible green space. Commissioned by Oxford City Council, our approach minimised hard infrastructure and prioritised habitat, access and discreet, dignified features.

Our design utilises the adjacent council car park to limit new paving and minimise vehicular access into the meadow. Natural drainage solutions, including vegetated swales, manage surface water and support biodiverse meadow habitats. Extensive woodland planting encloses new wildflower burial areas and extends existing woodland blocks, creating framed spaces for natural burial and habitat connectivity.

Design details include timber shelters for gatherings, timber footbridges and clusters of ornamental trees to aid wayfinding and subtle, respectful entrance features. A series of footpaths link to existing public rights of way and to Shotover Woods, encouraging walking and gentle recreation.

TEP acted as lead consultant coordinating landscape design, ecology, arboriculture and heritage input, supported by Campbell Reith for engineering and transport. The design balances practical burial provision with a nature-first approach that offers long-term stewardship, biodiversity benefits and a calm, natural setting for remembrance.
