Viking Link
Viking Link is an electricity interconnector between the UK and Denmark that is jointly owned and operated by National Grid and Danish system operator Energinet. The interconnector stretches for 757km from Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire to Revsing in Denmark.
We worked with National Grid on the identification of potential converter station sites in the vicinity of potential connection points in eastern England. We also considered potential cables routes between landfalls and the possible converter station sites together with connections between the converter station sites and transmission system connection points.
Our work went through a series of challenge and review sessions, during which inputs from marine consultants and technical specialists were considered to identify the most appropriate cable routes and sites to take forward for initial engagement with local planning authorities and statutory consultees,
Following consent from the four local planning authorities that the project spans (Boston Borough Council, North Kesteven District Council, South Holland District Council and East Lindsey District Council), we worked with National Grid, as lead consents officer, on the UK landfall, cable and converter elements of the project through the construction stages, ensuring all conditions, secondary consents and other issues were discharged and resolved in a timely manner.
Viking Link became operational on 29th December 2023 and holds a Guinness World Record as the longest land and subsea HVDC interconnector.
